What do I need to run VA?

You need a PC

Any reasonably modern personal computer based on an intel x86 (or compatible) microprocessor capable of running 32-bit software will run VA.

VA does not have particularly high RAM requirements, but you should have at least as much RAM as is recommended for your operating system.

A bare VA installation – before you collect any messages – requires a little over 12MB of disk space, but you will quickly find that you use much more space than that for downloaded messages. You can use the 'prune' feature of VA to keep your messagebase small, but you will typically find that you need several hundred MB for the messagebase.

You need Windows

... or a compatible environment - such as Wine on linux.

Current versions of VA are known to run on Windows 2000, Windows XP (both 32-bit and 64-bit) and Vista (both 32-bit and 64-bit). We no longer test VA on Windows95, Windows98, or Windows NT4 as these are regarded as obsolete.

On linux, VA can be used on Wine 0.9.61 and later. With some earlier versions of Wine there may be screen corruption in some dialogs that will make configuration difficult.

You need a data connection

To collect messages from the internet or CIX you will need an internet connection or a dial-up modem and a telephone line.

VA is designed to be an off line reader, so it does not require or assume that your internet connection will always be on or present.
